As you know, or maybe not, this year’s theme for the Row by Row Experience is “On the Go” and we knew it would be a fun one to design! There are SO many ways to interpret “On the Go”:
- Literal (things that move) – cars, planes, trains, and tractors (ahem, we’re in the great Midwest after all…)
- Interpretive (representing the general concept) – To be honest, my mind went here first! I had intended to design a row that wasn’t obvious to the theme, rather something that played with with other rows! My first sketch was a sky-view highway traffic scene. “Traffic Cam” was the working title, seen below.
- Outside the Box – packed bags, road signs, a compass, etc.
- And finally, Whimsical (playful and quirky)!
We’d like to think that our final design, “Float,” fits into this last category – Whimsical! The idea came about while picking out the fabrics to use for “Traffic Cam.” We thought it would be fun to fussy cut novelty prints and use those as the ‘car’ and ‘semi’ pieces of “Traffic Cam,” representing why people are on the go…dance lessons, a party, grocery run, etc.
While the idea was fun, “Traffic Cam” didn’t represent the theme as obviously as we’d hoped.
Ultimately, the fabric print “Balloons” designed by Melody Miller was our inspiration for “Float.” How lovely it would be to float away, letting the weight of the world disappear! Like many of you, I think sewing is my therapy. It helps me forget stresses and connect to a different part of myself – a creative, happy place.
“Float” also represents youthfulness, a free spirit, imagination, and creative connection to others.
As with many rows, you can incorporate this piece into a row-by-row quilt or quilt it alone as a wall hanging. However YOU interpret and connect to “Float,” we hope it brings a smile to your face.
